Playing with Math together

On November 22nd, we had our first Firebirds Teams Assembly. During these assemblies, we talk about Firebird core values and follow with a fun activity in classes with our Firebird teams. Firebird teams are made up of students from all grades mixed together. Students usually in the same team from K to grade 7. This supports our efforts in building a community of students who are comfortable and feel safe with each other, no matter the age difference.

This year, we have decided to align our Family Teams activities with our new FESL: “Building confidence through numeracy”. Our committee has been hard at work developing fun Math games and activities that lend themselves for all our learners! We wish to extend a big thank you to this committee.

Our first session was a blast, and students of all grades were engaged in learning from and with each other! We played with dominoes, loose parts, playing cards, pattern blocks and more! Students were also asked to share their favourite number and explain the special connection they had to that number. Engaging in such a way with Math is inherent to our goal of building confidence with Math as it encourages learners to think about Math as something that is all around us and that can be fun!
